You can be scammed by someone even if they are not directly asking for money. We have recently seen solicitations of employment which are scams to get your personal information which then leads to identity theft. The scammers work well known employment sites and count on your trust for the sites to lead you to trust them. The scammers act as a potential employer and count on your willingness to share your social security number with an employer. In addition to collecting your social security number they may request your banking information purportedly to set up direct deposit of wages. Once they have your banking information look out! And we have seen recent instances where they hire the person sight unseen and issue a check for prepayment of wages. The check isn’t good and doesn’t clear but it serves the purpose of lowering the person’s guard such that they are willing to share their personal or banking information or send good funds back to the employer purportedly for training materials. Always be on guard online.
We have just been notified some members are receiving text alert messages claiming there is an issue with their debit cards and to please call the number provided in the alert. Please be advised that this is NOT an alert from CPM Federal Credit Union. We would NEVER send such an alert nor would we ask for any sensitive information in this manner. The message does not mention CPM by name and is sent by a scammer who does not know where you bank nor do they have any of your banking information. They send it in the hopes some recipients presume it is from their financial institution and return the call. Recipients returning the call reach a “card services department” and are prompted to provide their card number. This is a scam to collect card numbers!
